SCENE: The Holiday
Inn in Chinle, AZ well before the iPhone Rooster goes off
TRAVELLER #1 (who is already dressed and ready): Hey, get up!
We’ve got a canyon waiting to be hiked
TRAVELLER #2 (who has pulled the covers over her head): Mom, the canyon has been there for 350 million
years, I’m pretty sure it will still be there by mid-morning.
TRAVELLER #1: Yes,
but by mid-morning it will be 95 degrees
TRAVELLER #2: OK good
point (while leaping out of bed to get ready)
So at 0716 we pulled in to the White House Overlook, the
trailhead to the White House Trail, the only public trail down in to Canyon de
Chelly. This is an 800 yr old complex originally built by the Puebloeans. Years later the Navajo moved in and occupied
the site. Today, we hike down first
thing in the morning to check it out and eat an apples-and-granola breakfast at
the foot of an 800-year old community.
