A Giant Crack in the Ground

Thats the non-geological explanation of the Grand Canyon...a giant crack in the ground.  For those of us with a little more appreciation of God's wonders of the world, we just call it amazing.

Luckily this mini-heat wave we had driven in to the middle of was squelched by some nice cloud cover, making it at least bearable to walk around and look down in to the canyon.  Sure, we weren't hiking down Bright Angel Trail, but at least we could enjoy the view from the top (it was rumored to be 117 degrees down in the canyon).

What I failed to remember was that mom is not a huge fan of heights.  And most of the South Rim of the Grand Canyon has a 5000 foot (or more) straight drop off the rim.  By my third exclamation of:  "HEY THIS WILL BE A GREAT PICTURE!! Turn around and take a small step backward" I got The Look.  I didn't attempt to enhance any more pictures by getting my photo subject closer to the rim for the rest of the day.
